Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville, LA

This is a state park for Louisiana, and once again they have done a great job in making these parks so nice.  We decided to get away for a quick weekend, and it couldn't have been more perfect.  The weather cooperated.  We arrived Friday morning and set up.  The spaces were very large, woodsy, and private.  We did not have full hookups, but the park has two separate bath houses with washer/dryers in each of them.  This was supposedly a black bear area, but once again, no such luck in seeing any.  





Saturday after we ran the park, we went out to eat at Shuck's in Abbeville.  It was really chilly, but we sat on the patio next to heaters.  It's a nice place with a singer and good food.  Our order was lost,, but the waitress was so sweet.  They gave us 50% off and a free bread pudding.  Probably the best bread pudding in a  long time.

We saw buzzards and only two deer as we were leaving.  I would go back to this park.  The splash pad was the largest I had seen and on Saturday, they had dutch cooking.  There are several playgrounds, and the park is well kept.

  August 26, 2020 Mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Laura... Talk about leaving in a hurry!  Packed up a four-year old grandchild, headed down the road to Lampasas, Texas, with no provisions and no idea what we were doing. And the adventure began.  Arrived at a campground called  Our Friends Campground.  They were gracious and helped us out so much.  Especially as we were leaving on the Saturday after we arrived, backing up the SUV to hook up, and realized someone had stolen our hitch.  (Not at the campground - probably WalMart.)  So, off we go, again, but this time with two grandchildren (2 and 4) and head off to find a new hitch.  A seven-hour trip ended up taking 13 hours.  Needless to say, I wasn't sure I was made out for this camping life.  We had already run out of gas and lost the camper keys on the way home from picking up the camper.  So, we get home to no power, no water, almost no way to get down the streets.  ...

Toledo Bend MWR, Florien, LA

May 28 - 30, 2021 This is our second military campground.  The spots were so small that some RV's couldn't back in.  The grandkids came with us.  But, we had a little boy that would not leave our campground and truly ruined the experience for us.  The campground was well kept, but the bathrooms left something to be desired.  There was a logging competition going on Saturday, and that was interesting.  The lake and beach were great with a bounce pillow and a great playground.  We were able to walk with the grandkids and get ice cream and look at the boats.  I don't know if I'd go back because of the closeness of the sites.
